Twirling compasses and mysterious codes
‘Sir, the captain asked me to get you’ Fenrir looked up from the desk, a little boy was standing in the opening of the cabin. ‘Did the captain tell you why?’ the boy shook his head ‘no sir’. Fenrir closed his notebook and put it in his bag. They had been flying across space for three days but according to his calculations it should be four more before they arrived at his destination. ‘Captain Odalis, you called for me?’ the tall bird-like alien turned around ‘yes yes that's right I wanted to talk to you’. Fenrir looked confused.
‘About what?’
‘Your journey, ofcourse!’
‘My… journey?’
Odalis laughed ‘you know, the day we planned to leave you just stepped on board and asked if you could join, like it’s the most normal thing in the world’
‘Well, to me it kinda is captain’
‘So you travel a lot?’
‘You could say that’ Fenrir said smiling ‘I consider myself quite the explorer, it's what I do’
Odalis turned around again and grabbed two glasses and a bottle, ‘well then you fancy a drink while you tell me about some of those adventures of yours’.
‘Sir’ Fenrir stopped writing, ‘does the captain want me to join him in his cabin again?’. ‘No sir, we are at your planned destination’ Fenrir jumped up from his chair and quickly shoved his things in his bag. ‘Thanks again for the ride captain Odalis’ Fenrir waved while getting off the ship, ‘thank you for your wonderful stories and feel free to tell me if you ever need another ride!’. The captain had invited Fenrir to his quarters every day after their first encounter to talk more about his journeys, Odalis had told him that he used to be an explorer too when he was young and that he remembered those good old days while listening to Fenrir's stories.
It took Fenrir a day to travel to the location on the map Avi, Levi and he deciphered a few weeks ago. ‘This should be the exact spot, but I can’t see a single thing that could hold a treasure’ he looked around confused talking to himself and grabbed his compass out of his pouch. ‘How curious’ he smiled while looking at the madly spinning arrow on his compass ‘very curious and if I’m correct that means there is something of a strong metal right underneath my paws’.
‘And there you are’ a big metal hatch appeared hidden in a thick bush but not completely invisible. He opened the heavy hatch and climbed down the ladder and stood in the small metal room. ‘This doesn’t look like some big treasure room to me’. He looked around, there was a bed, a small desk, a bookshelf and something that looked like a primitive kitchen. ‘Now why would a map found in an ancient temple send me here?’. He sat on the bed and a bunch of dust flew into the air. ‘Seems like nobody has been here in a while’... ‘but why, who used to live here, why did they live here, why leave and most importantly, why did that map bring me here?’. Fenrir started walking around looking through the papers on the desk and the notes on the wall. Most of the texts were written in code but the few notes that he could read mentioned treasures, knowledge and… a lost city? ‘This all sounds insane’ he was pacing around collecting all papers in a folder ‘but what if it isn’t, what if it’s true’ he found a shoulder bag underneath the bed and started putting everything he could find in it. ‘Yes, this would be the discovery of the century!’ Fenrir started taking the papers off the wall, adding it to the collection in the bag. He wrote down the titles of the books in the bookcase, grabbing three old and rare looking ones. Just as he thought he had everything and wanted to walk out he reminded himself ‘always check the vents Fenrir’. A dusty yellowish notebook filled with weird sketches and more coded texts, ‘bingo’. He looked around the room one last time and started to climb out ‘Avi and Levi are gonna love to hear about this’.
